About ZTPrototypes

ZT Prototypes is a Cambridge-based electronics engineering and product development consultancy providing structured, production-focused product development support to hardware startups and established product teams.

Why we exist

The gap we were built to close

Engineering workspace

ZT Prototypes was established to address a recurring problem in hardware product development: the gap between a viable product concept and access to the engineering rigour required to bring it to market.

Hardware startups and early-stage product teams consistently encounter the same obstacles. Large consultancies impose lengthy onboarding processes and rigid engagement structures. Independent engineers often lack the breadth to deliver across electronics, firmware, and mechanical design as a cohesive system. Overseas development introduces communication overhead and quality assurance risk. The consequence is extended timelines, fragmented ownership, and products that never reach production.

ZT Prototypes was founded to bridge that gap. A single, technically disciplined team capable of taking a product from initial feasibility assessment through to a validated, production-ready prototype, with clearly defined scope, structured milestones, and direct access to the engineer leading the work.

Founder & Technical Lead

I started ZT Prototypes because I saw the same problem playing out over and over. Talented founders with genuinely good product ideas were getting stuck, either priced out by large development houses or let down by unreliable freelancers.

I wanted to build the consultancy I would have wanted to hire. One that's technically rigorous, transparent on cost and timeline, and structured to get early-stage products from concept to production without unnecessary complexity.

What we stand for

The standards we hold ourselves to

These principles define how we approach every engagement and every technical decision we make on behalf of our clients.

Technical Integrity

We will advise if an approach is not feasible, if a timeline is unrealistic, or if a design decision introduces unnecessary risk. Our responsibility is to provide accurate technical counsel, not to confirm expectations.

Efficiency Over Complexity

We favour the most effective solution that satisfies the requirement. Over-engineering extends timelines and introduces additional failure modes. Sound engineering is defined as much by what is excluded as by what is included.

Long-Term Partnership

We measure success by whether a product reaches production, not solely by whether a prototype was delivered. Our engagements are structured to support clients beyond the initial build, through iteration, validation, compliance, and manufacturing.
